Cybersecurity talent shortage: how to solve a growing problem?
The shortage of cybersecurity talent, especially in the networking space, has led to an increase in security breaches, which result in reputational and economic losses. The virtualization of tasks and activities that used to be performed in-person, as well as the digitization of services and the handling of larger data, has complicated organizational response to these threats. Organizations now need to protect users and information across multiple fronts, both internally and externally. The supply chains of many organizations are involving a greater number of digital agents and processes that, while making life easier for end users, hinder the necessary protection of data, leaving companies with very low levels of security that are constantly targeted by cybercriminals.
This increasing virtualization has put organizations at a crossroads where they must make quick and effective decisions to avoid being the target of cyber-attacks; The demand for cybersecurity talent is growing every day; however, the supply, ironically, is declining, which exposes organizations to multiple attack vectors, which means that the shortage of cybersecurity talent is one of the most important challenges organizations face today.
Let's look at the situation
An annual study by the International Information System Security Certification Consortium, or (ISC)2, a non-profit organization which specializes in training and certifications for cybersecurity professionals, indicated that in 2021 there were 4.19 million cybersecurity professionals worldwide. This is an increase of more than 700,000 compared to 2020, but yet there was still a shortage of experts by 2.72 million. According to the report “the global cybersecurity workforce needs to grow by 65% for organizations to be able to defend themselves effectively”. This lack of staff obviously exposes organizations to greater risks and to consequences including the following:
- Misconfigured systems
- Lack of time for proper risk assessment and management
- Delays in patching critical systems
- Carelessness in procedures and processes
- Inability to keep current with active threats against organizational networks
- Rushed deployments
Fortinet’s 2022 Cybersecurity Skills Gap Report shows that 8 out of 10 organizations have experienced at least one gap that they could attribute to a lack of cybersecurity skills or awareness. The same report indicates that 60% of managers admit that their organization has difficulties in hiring staff and 52% admit to difficulties retaining them. In addition to valuing cybersecurity education, 87% of organizations have implemented a training program to increase cybersecurity awareness among their employees, seeing the need for IT and cybersecurity workforce growth.
The solution
As we have seen, the shortage of cybersecurity talent is no small problem! Organizations have realized that threats are not only external, but are also materialized by internal factors that range from lack of knowledge and experience to negligence and malicious acts by some members of our human talent. At this point, awareness, security education, the promotion of best practices and the engagement of our employees are decisive in establishing a solid information security structure.
To help organizations address this talent gap, at Synergy Advisors we have developed a 4-day training in which we offer a comprehensive agenda that includes knowledge of networking, security, and monitoring, based on best practices and next generation security solutions.
Synergy Advisors’ Azure Perimeter 4-Day Training is made up of strategic sessions, masterclasses, and hands-on labs, designed to take the user on a journey through the main models, concepts, and protocols related to managing, securing, and monitoring your corporate network. In 4 days, your team will learn best practices and tactics in network design, architecture and topology, network types, operation, perimeter protection, policies, and security from a Zero Trust model perspective.
