Why migrate our information to cloud repositories?
Migration to the cloud is the process of moving applications and data from an infrastructure or local environment (on-premises) to a cloud-provided platform or service. The use of cloud repositories enables organizations to limit implementation and maintenance costs, as well as personnel for resources responsible for managing the infrastructure.
For some years now, migrating to the cloud has been a growing trend in the market, with the greatest proponents being large organizations that have migrated their data and applications to more modern repositories. According to MIT, 90% of large global companies will incorporate cloud computing in the next 3 years. Likewise, 60% of the opportunities for productivity gains in the next decade are expected to be cloud-based.
On the other hand, financial institutions have shown to be quite sympathetic to the idea of hosting their users’ information in cloud environments, as well as their internal applications and those aimed at the end user; in the next 3 years it is expected that 44% of all financial applications will be hosted in these types of repositories (MIT Technology Review Insights).
These numbers show a scenario quite in favor of cloud migration; however, a survey conducted by Ponemon and Entrust to 6,610 companies in 17 countries shows how some organizations are still skeptical about making this transition. What are the reasons?
Here are some of the results of that survey:
- 30% of companies hesitate to incorporate their repositories into the cloud
- 37% of U.S. organizations have experienced a data breach in the cloud
- 44% of financial organizations report having suffered a data breach in the cloud
What is the reason?
Based on these numbers and what Synergy Advisors’ research and sales teams have detected, who are in constant contact with customers of all sizes and industries, we can draw some conclusions around this situation:
- Some companies are afraid of losing control over their data if they migrate it to the cloud. According to Ponemon and Entrust, 65% of organizations surveyed say the biggest challenge is to know where their data is located.
- There are significant gaps in the cybersecurity strategies and in the education of end users in best security practices in some organizations. 36% of organizations in the United Kingdom failed a data audit in 2021. Likewise, the high percentage of companies that have experienced data security breaches highlights the lack of robust strategies to mitigate these and other risks.
- A greater awareness of the importance of establishing proactive strategies is necessary; only 30% of the organizations surveyed have an information protection strategy.
- The high volume of data that organizations move makes it more difficult to manage; the analytics on this data has been frequently missing, generating reprocesses and difficulty to make strategic decisions
Is it possible to securely migrate?
To optimize your unstructured data is to improve the visibility and security of your information, which is critical for reliable data to support intelligent decisions and for comprehensive file management. Centralizing organizational information, taking advantage of the capabilities of cloud repositories and the document management capabilities they provide, is now possible in a secure way, protecting data from end to end.
To begin this transformation and move from an on-premises infrastructure toward modern repositories, it is important to follow an organized process and have a provider that supports you and facilitates this transition. There are different technical processes and best practices for migrating different workloads and creating different cloud configurations, but all cloud migrations follow the same six basic phases, suggested by Microsoft:
Identify the business goal for the migration and the expected results.
Align the cloud migration plan with desired business outcomes.
Prepare your on-premises and cloud environments for migration.
Move workloads to the cloud environment.
Compare and implement cost and security governance best practices for the cloud environment and its workloads.
Use proven methodologies for ongoing cloud solution management.
Benefits of modernizing repositories and moving to the cloud
In addition to being able to optimize workloads for better costs, there are significant savings in equipment, maintenance, and real estate costs.
Get exactly the right computing resources, when you need them, on demand and never pay for equipment you don’t use. Plus, with the global presence of some cloud platforms, you can run workloads closer to you and your customers’ locations for better performance.
Public clouds make it easy to protect data and applications by providing built-in security at the platform level, along with a variety of specialized security tools. In many cases, the cloud service provider automatically takes care of applying security patches.
For highly regulated industries such as finance, healthcare, and government, some cloud platforms have specialized offerings to more easily meet compliance requirements.
Most cloud providers offer built-in, one-click backup recovery capabilities, including the ability to store backups in different geographic regions.
If the cloud service provider offers a central management tool, it’s easy to manage and monitor cloud and data center resources from a single screen.
